Cassia

Cassia is an excerpt from “Killing Caesar” (2020) by Jon Pescevich.

(…soldiers leave with some Prisoners…)

(…the Protesters tend to their wounds and their wounded…)

(…Cassia comforts them…)

Cassia:

Nor stoney tower, nor walls of beaten brass,

nor airless dungeon, nor strong links of iron,

can stop the strength of spirit.

But life, being weary of these worldly bars,

never lacks the power to dismiss itself.

Ah!

Therein, ye gods,

you make the strong most weak;

Protesters:

Those stoney towers, and walls of beaten brass,

those airless dungeons, and strong links of iron…

Cassia:

Therein, ye gods,

you tyrants do defeat.

Protesters:

We beg the gods,

please help us find relief.
